Horror start to public holiday road toll
Club spokesperson Ms Ritchie implored drivers to make sure they, and their loved ones, got home safely.
“We’re only three weeks into this year and already 15 people have been killed on our roads. That’s up from nine for the same time last year. This isn’t just a road toll, it’s 15 people who’ve left behind grieving loved ones,” Ms Ritchie said.
“Sadly, we’ve seen a number of very serious crashes on our roads in the past few days as many people travel to visit family and friends and celebrate the Australia Day long weekend.
“We’re pleading with people to remember the Fatal Five, don’t drive tired or if you’ve been drinking, stick to the speed limit, wear a seatbelt and avoid risky distractions behind the wheel.
“We know there is wet weather forecast for parts of the State over the next couple of days, so if you are out on the road for Australia Day or are travelling home from holidays, please slow down and be patient, there will be more traffic on the roads.
“With Tuesday also marking the end of the summer break, we know the usual traffic hot spots like the Pacific Motorway, Bruce Highway and Gateway Motorway will be congested.
“If you can stagger your journey so you’re not leaving mid-morning after most accommodation check-out times, you may avoid the worst of it.”
Ms Ritchie reminded drivers to check the traffic conditions before they set off.
“Make sure you visit RACQ Road Conditions website to check the most up to date traffic information before you hit the road.”
