RACQ sees red over risky drivers

News
The State’s peak motoring body said it was disappointed in the more than 24,000 drivers caught running red lights across Queensland last year who risked the lives of all road users by failing to stop.

Department of Transport and Main Roads figures show more than 20,000 traffic infringements were handed out to drivers from red light cameras, and a further 4,000 issued by Queensland police officers between January and October 2020.

The Courier Mail reported Brisbane CBD was the worst police district for red light offences, followed by Mount Gravatt, Boondall and Coomera.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said running a red light was extremely dangerous and risked the lives of other road users.

“Whether you’re in a hurry, or not paying attention, there’s never an excuse for running a red and the consequences could be deadly for cyclists, pedestrians or other motorists,” Ms Ritchie said.

“The yellow light means stop if it’s safe to do so. Many people believe the yellow light is the end of the green phase but it is in fact the start of the red phase of the traffic lights.

“Across Queensland, this dangerous behaviour will earn you a $400 fine and three demerit points.

“We’ve already seen too many lives lost on Queensland roads this year and we need all road users to play their part by paying attention and practicing safe driving behaviour at all times.”
