Chinese car maker GWM has launched Australia’s first hybrid 4x4, the Tank 300.

Calling something a ‘tank’ was once a putdown for a vehicle that was big, heavy and ungainly, but Chinese car maker GWM is hoping to rehabilitate the phrase with the introduction of its new Tank 300 hybrid 4WD.

Claiming “unbeatable levels of toughness and sophistication”, the Tank 300 is being pitched as a rugged and fuel-efficient alternative for those looking to get off the beaten track.

Built on GWM's global body-on-frame off-road platform, the company said the Tank 300 was designed to perform in all conditions, with ground clearance of 224mm matched by 33-degree approach angle and 34-degree departure angle.

With overall dimensions (L/W/H) of 4,760mm x 1,930mm x 1,903mm, the five-seat Tank 300 is slightly shorter than a Toyota Prado but wider and taller than the popular seven-seat 4x4 wagon.

Available in two well-appointed trim levels, Lux and Ultra, the Lux Hybrid is priced at $55,990 drive-away and the Ultra Hybrid at $60,990 drive-away.

Standard features on the Lux Hybrid include 17-inch alloy wheels, 12.3-inch full colour instrument cluster, 12.3-inch full colour infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two-piece under-body guard, tyre pressure monitoring system and seven airbags.

Safety features include adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree view monitor.

Beneath its Jeep-like exterior styling, the Tank is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine offering 180kW/380Nm and an electric motor which serves up an additional 78kW/268Nm.

No figures are supplied for the vehicle’s combined system output but drive is via a nine-speed automatic transmission and a Torque on Demand 4WD system that’s said to enable strong off-road traction.

Towing capacity is a respectable but not class-leading 2,500kg.

The GWM Tank is the third NEV (New Energy Vehicle) offering from the car maker, with the others being the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid and GWM Haval H6 Hybrid.

Like other GWM products, the new model is backed by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, five years roadside assistance and five years capped price servicing.
