Hard on the heels of RACQ driving the dual-motor versions of Polestar’s latest electric SUV, the Polestar 3, the company has announced details of a new entry-level rear-wheel drive variant offering up to 700km of range.

The new rear-wheel drive variant of the Polestar 3 SUV – dubbed the Long Range Single Motor – will be the most affordable way into the Chinese-owned and Swedish-headquartered brand’s new premium EV, with a starting price of $118,420 (MRLP).

It will also be the variant capable of travelling the greatest distance between charges, with Polestar releasing a preliminary range estimate of up to 700km on the on the more rigorous WLTP test cycle.

This compares with the Long-range Dual-motor version which extracts 628km (WLTP) from its identical 111kWh lithium-ion battery, and the range-topping Long Range Dual Motor with Performance Pack which gets the same battery but drains it quicker thanks to its enhanced outputs, delivering a still-respectable 561km (WLTP).

All three Polestar 3 variants offer the ability to charge their 111kWh battery at up to 250kW DC, delivering a 30-minute 10–80% charge on the high-capacity charger.

Performance-wise, the new single-motor variant drives its rear axle only, producing a healthy 220kW/490Nm for a brisk 0–100km/h sprint time of 7.8 seconds.

This compares with the Long-range Dual-motor’s outputs of 360kW/840Nm and 0-100km/h time of 5.0 seconds, while the Performance Pack boosts power and torque to 380kW/910Nm and drops the 0–100km/h sprint to a sharp 4.5 seconds.

The Polestar 3 is the second model from the EV-only brand, which previously sold only the smaller Polestar 2.

That model boasts a crossover body style with limited rear-seat legroom, while the Polestar 3 is considerably larger and roomier, with more family-friendly interior dimensions.

It’s strictly a five-seater, though, thanks to its dynamic roofline.

Like the Polestar 3 dual-motor variants, the new rear-drive model’s polished exterior design reinforces the brand’s Swedish minimalist aesthetic, with Polestar running hard on its sustainability credentials, including the extensive use of responsibly sourced and recycled materials.

Also like its stablemates, the new model promises performance-oriented driving dynamics.

RACQ hasn’t yet driven the rear-drive variant but drove both dual motor variants in Tasmania recently and came away impressed by their attractive design, roomy interior, strong performance and impressive ride and handling balance.

The new variant’s $118,420 (MRLP) sticker price includes the Pilot Pack as standard, slotting into the range below the $132,720 Long Range Dual Motor with Pilot pack, and the range-topping Long Range Dual Motor with Pilot and Performance pack at $144,420 (MRLP).

The Pilot Pack enables enhanced 3D scanning of the car’s surroundings and helps prepare the car for autonomous driving, according to Polestar. It includes an additional control unit, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and cleaning for the front- and rear-view cameras.

Other standard features of the Long Range Single Motor include active LED headlights, flush-fit door handles, a panoramic glass roof, 20-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, triple-zone climate control, a 14.5-inch multimedia touchscreen, and electrically adjustable and heated seats.

Options include a choice of six exterior colours, six interior treatments, and four different wheel options, including a 21-inch alloy wheel.

The new variant is available to order now, with Australian deliveries commencing early in 2025.

MY24 versions of the dual motor variants are already on sale and being offered exclusively as ‘Launch Editions’ featuring the Pilot Pack and Plus Pack as standard.

The Plus Pack adds a Bowers and Wilkins audio system, rear heated seats, soft-close doors, heated and powered steering wheel and usually retails for $11,750.
