A mid-sized SUV priced below $35,000 that comes loaded with premium features is the new reality for Australian consumers as Chinese car maker Jaecoo rattles the market with its aggressive pricing.
Jaecoo is the latest in a wave of Chinese brands to land on the Australian market, with the J7 medium SUV its debut product.
The freshly minted brand, which only made its global debut at Auto Shanghai in 2023, is a sub-division of Chery International.
Chery is already established here with models including the Omoda 5, Omoda E5, Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro, and Tiggo 8 Pro Max.
The addition of Jaecoo to Chery’s stable will strengthen the brand’s hand as it looks to compete for market share against fellow Chinese brands including BYD, MG and GWM.
How much will the Jaecoo J7 cost?
Launching in May and leading the charge for Jaecoo is the J7, a stylish looking mid-sized SUV that will be offered in four variants, starting with the entry-level turbo-petrol powered and two-wheel drive J7 Core priced at $34,990 driveaway, and running up to the plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) all-wheel drive J7 SHS priced at $47,990 driveaway.
Aside from the PHEV, all other J7 variants are powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine which delivers outputs of 137kW/275Nm driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Features of the conventionally powered Jaecoo range
The conventionally powered J7 variants are available in two- or all-wheel drive, with the entry-level Core and mid-spec Track driving their front wheels only and returning combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.0L/100km, while the all-wheel drive J7 Ridge uses 7.8L/100km.
At $34,990 driveaway one might expect the Jaecoo J7 2WD Core to be something of a stripper model but that’s far from true.
Standard features of the Jaecoo J7 2WD Core:

Jaecoo also offers capped price servicing for the first eight scheduled services totalling $2,952 for the 2WD variants and $3322 for the AWD.
Features of the Jaecoo J7 plug-in hybrid
Sitting atop the J7 range is the plug-in-hybrid SHS (Super Hybrid System) variant, priced at $47,990 driveaway, which has a pure-electric range of 106km (NEDC) and a combined hybrid-petrol range of 1200km.
The J7 SHS combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 105kW/215Nm, with a single electric motor delivering 150kW/310Nm, for combined system outputs of 255kW/525Nm.
Drive is sent to the front-wheels via a single-speed transmission with Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes, while the hybrid system offers EV and HEV drive modes comprising pure electric, series, parallel, and energy-recovery modes.
Pure electric operation is available at speeds up to 120km/h while the batter has above 30% charge, with the system switching seamlessly to petrol-hybrid operation when the charge falls below that level.
The J7’s 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery can be charged from 30-80% at up to 40kW on a DC fast charger in only 20 minutes.
Standard features of the Jaecoo J7 SHS include:

- 19-inch ‘aero’ alloy wheel
- 17 advanced driver-aid systems.
The Jaecoo J7 SHS offers the same eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty as its ICE stablemates, but no specific warranty for the battery.
The standard 12 months of roadside assistance is likewise extendable to seven years if servicing is completed at authorised Jaecoo dealers.
Chery has previously said it plans to have 30 to 40 authorised dealer locations in Australia by the time the new Jaecoo J7 SUV arrives in showrooms in May 2025.
Capped price servicing costs for the J7 SHS are set at $3372 for the first eight annual scheduled services.
