MG adds U9 ute to its range
Chinese car maker MG is the latest brand to announce a contender in Australia’s booming but increasingly crowded ute segment.

Among the unprecedented wave of new Chinese models revealed at the reborn Melbourne motor show was a new dual-cab 4x4 ute from MG, dubbed the U9.
Boasting a bluff chrome grille that wouldn’t be out of place on a Ford F-150, along with edgy, angular styling, the U9 will be powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine developing a claimed 164kW driving through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
No torque figure was supplied for the engine but 164kW of power puts it ahead of both the Ford Ranger’s bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder (154kW/500Nm) and the Toyota HiLux’s 2.8-litre turbodiesel (150kW/500Nm).
Few other details were revealed at the event at which MG unveiled no fewer than six new models and stated its strategy of offering a vehicle for every life stage and at every $10k price point, along with its ambition of becoming a top-five brand in Australia by the end of 2027, and a top-three brand by 2030.
MG was Australia’s best-selling Chinese automotive brand in 2024 and ranked seventh overall sales on 50,592 sales.
With utes being the second highest selling vehicle category after medium SUVs, the new U9 will give MG a player in what is an increasingly vital market segment.
The MG U9 will also be sold here under the LDV brand as the Terron 9 and is due to arrive in Australian dealerships in late 2025, with pre-orders set to open in the second half of 2025.
