Ford Australia has confirmed the automotive world’s worst kept-secret by announcing that its wildly successful US-manufactured Mustang Mach-E electric SUV will go on sale here later this year.

Online reservations for the highly acclaimed fully electric Mustang SUV open soon, the company said, with customers able to choose from a trio of variants offering different range and performance, including the flagship Mach-E GT all-wheel drive which delivers a spirited 358kW/860Nm.

There’s no exact launch date for the beyond “later this year” and no pricing details just yet, but in the US the Mustang Mach-E is priced to compete with the Tesla Model Y, which suggests a starting price around $70,000, rising to about $100,000 for the top-grade model.

The trio of Mustang Mach-E variants includes the Select, Premium and flagship GT.

The entry-level Select is powered by a 71kWh battery driving a single electric motor delivering 198kW/ 430Nm to the rear wheels, with a targeted range of circa 470km.

The Mach-E Premium utilises a bigger 91kWh battery, also paired with a single 216kW/430Nm electric motor for close to 600km of range, the longest range in the line-up.

Finally, the performance-oriented Mach-E GT utilises the higher capacity 91kWh battery, but features dual electric motors for combined outputs to all four wheels of 358kW/860Nm, and a claimed driving range of 490km.

Ford says the GT will be the quickest car in its Aussie line-up, capable of an electrifying 0-100km/h sprint of 3.7 seconds, meaning it will easily outpace the brand’s 345kW/556Nm 5.0-litre V8-powered Mustang Mach 1 Fastback, which covers the 0-100km/h sprint in an estimated 4.3 seconds.

The performance-oriented GT also features semi-adaptive MagneRide  suspension, performance brakes and Ford’s Untame Plus drive mode extension, which delivers quicker acceleration response, a sportier steering feel, and more relaxed stability and traction control limits, among other changes.

The interior of the Mach-E features seating for five adults, a panoramic sunroof, and centrepiece 15.5-inch infotainment screen, equipped with Ford’s SYNC4 operating system, a  10.2-inch digital cluster, wireless mobile phone charging and a 10-speaker B&O sound system.

Despite bearing the famous Mustang monicker and galloping horse logo on its grille, the Mach-E is built on Ford’s purpose-built Global Electrified 1 platform and bears virtually no resemblance otherwise to the internal-combustion powered Mustang coupes Ford sells.

It will be Ford Australia’s first all-electric passenger vehicle, following the launch of the electric E-Transit commercial van, with the company saying it aims to sell at least five electrified vehicles here by the end of 2024.

The Mach-E went on sale in the US in December 2020 and has been the country’s second best-selling electric vehicle behind the Tesla Model Y.

Ford celebrated the manufacture of the 150,000th Mach-E in November last year and said at the time that it planned to ramp up production to 270,000 units per annum, with exports to more than 37 different countries.

“We are thrilled to bring the Mustang Mach-E to Australia,” President and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand Andrew Birkic said.

“It’s an exciting time for electric vehicles in Australia and Mach-E gives us the chance to do what Mustang has done best for decades – put a smile on customer’s faces.

“We know Australians love that feeling of driving a performance car, and the Mach-E will mean they can enjoy that iconic Mustang freedom with all the benefits that an EV offers.”

Customers can reserve their Mustang Mach-E online through ford.com.au via one of Ford’s EV-approved dealers, with expressions of interest able to be lodged here
