Fifteen years after its first unsuccessful foray into the Australian market, Chinese car maker Geely is back with the competitively priced EX5 mid-sized SUV spearheading its offer.

The EX5 is the first in what is expected to be a range of new models from the Chinese automotive heavyweight which also lists Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, Lotus, Smart, and Proton Cars among its vehicle brands.

In the years since West Australian car importer John Hughes first sought to establish Geely here, the brand has grown into an industry giant, with Geely Automotive Holdings sales reaching 2.79 million units worldwide in 2023, and with 35% of those being New Energy Vehicles.

Another significant difference in Geely’s second coming is that this is a factory-backed effort, with the car maker launching with 22 dealerships Australia-wide, including five in Queensland, and announcing plans to rapidly grow that to more than 100 dealerships in the coming years.

How much will the EX5 cost?

Leading the charge for Geely 2.0 is the new EX5, a battery-electric powered midsize SUV that starts at a highly competitive $40,990 (RRP) for the entry-level Complete, or $44.9990 (RRP) for the better-equipped Inspire.

That pricing undercuts rivals including the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Leapmotor C10 and Deepal S07, and Geely has further sweetened the pot with a special package of launch extras available on cars ordered before 30 April 2025.

The launch deal includes one-year complimentary public charging, free 7kW home charger (excluding installation), three years complimentary scheduled servicing, an upgrade to premium paint, and a 3.88% comparison rate on finance.

What is the EX5’s range and charging capacity?

Beyond its keen pricing, the Toyota RAV4-sized EX5 looks to have a competitive technical package, with a 60.22kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery providing a WLTP range of 430km for the Complete and 410km for the Inspire.

Both variants feature the same powertrain with the range difference coming down to the Inspire running lower-profile 19-inch wheels and tyres.

Drive comes from a single electric motor powering the front wheels and delivering claimed outputs of 160kW/320Nm, with other notable features including 11kW AC and 100kW DC fast-charging ability, plus vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability with a discharge rate of up to 3.3 kW.
