Legendary Italian car maker Alfa Romeo returns to the sub-4.2m compact car segment with its stylish new Junior, a compact SUV available with both plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (EV) powertrains.

Due in Q3 of this year, the Junior boasts the trademark emotional Italian design Alfa Romeo is renowned for, underpinned by hi-tech powertrains and the latest in in-car technologies.

The two Junior models are dubbed Ibrida (hybrid) and Elettrica (electric), with the former featuring a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Miller-cycle engine with variable-geometry turbo and 48V mild-hybrid tech, while the Elettrica Junior combines a single electric motor and 54kWh battery providing up to 407km of driving range (WLTP).

Front and centre in the Junior’s sleek design is Alfa’s trademark ‘scudetto’ (shield) grille, flanked by distinctive LED matrix headlights, while the lower part of the front-end features large side air intakes like those found on stablemates the Tonale, Stelvio and Giulia.

Among the car’s many neat design flourishes are the fabled ‘biscione’ (serpent) lasered into the C-pillar, and the ‘coda tronca’ or truncated tail that pays design homage to the legendary 1960s Guilia TZ.

The Junior maintains the stylish design focus inside, too, with quality materials and a driver-centric layout that speaks to the brand’s sporty heritage. A 10.25-inch instrument cluster sits within Alfa’s historical ‘cannocchiale’ (telescope) housing ahead of the driver, while in the middle of the dash is a 10.25-inch infotainment system with My Alfa Connect connected services as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Sporty sculpted seats clad in a combination of leatherette and cloth cosset the driver and front passenger, with the driver getting six-way electronic adjustment, as well as massaging functionality.

Other tasty interior design elements include air-conditioning vents in the shape of a ‘quadrifoglio’ (four-leaf clover), and the central tunnel enhanced with eight-colour interior ambient lighting.

The electrical component of the Junior Ibrida consists of a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a 21kW electric motor built into the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which sends outputs of 100kW/230Nm to the front axle.

The powertrain enables a 0-100 km/h sprint of 8.9 seconds, and fuel efficiency of just 4.1L/100km (NEDC).

The Junior Electrica meanwhile boasts a front-mounted electric motor that produces 115kW/260Nm, coupled with a 54kWh battery pack and can cover the 0-100km/h dash in 9.0 seconds, with a driving range of up to 407km (WLTP). The battery is capable of 11kW AC charging or 100kW DC fast charging.

The Junior will be offered in a single trim in both Ibrida and Elettrica at launch, with standard features including 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, automatic LED Matrix headlights, gloss black body kit and exterior mirrors, LED taillamps, two-tone black roof, and privacy glass.

Standard interior features include black cloth and leatherette sports seats with red finishes, a leather steering wheel, aluminium pedals and door sills, six-speaker audio system with DAB+, Alfa Connected Services with navigation, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and start, heated front seats, power tailgate with handsfree function, and a frameless auto-dimming rear view mirror.

The standard safety kit includes six airbags, front, rear and side parking sensors, reversing camera with dynamic lines, intelligent adaptive cruise control, blind spot assist, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with vulnerable road user detection, lane support system, driver attention alert, traffic sign recognition and intelligent speed control, tyre pressure monitoring, and rain sensing wipers.

Pricing for Alfa’s new electrified pocket rocket range will be released closer to launch in Q3, 2025.
