Volkswagen Australia is sweetening the pot for early adopters of its new Tesla-fighting ID. 3 and ID.4 EVs pot by throwing in a free home charger for the first 500 customers.

Volkswagen Australian is finally delivering on its long-promised EV onslaught with the launch of its Tesla Model Y-fighting ID.4 Pro and ID. 5 GTX SUVs, which arrive hard on the heels of its recently launched all-electric ID.Buzz electric van range.

First deliveries of the new Volkswagen EVs are due in July and will be followed later this year by the closely related ID.4 GTX and ID. 5 Pro, swelling the German car makers local EV offering to three separate models encompassing eight variants.

And, with the order books now officially opened for the ID.4 Pro and ID. 5 GTX, Volkswagen Australia is sweetening the pot for the first 500 customers by including a free home charge.

The 7kW home EV charger deal covers standard installation – which includes up to 20m cabling, safety switch, circuit breaker, and installation by a certified installer – and is valued at $1,899, according to Volkswagen Australia.

The deal comes on top of what is regarded as sharp pricing for the ID.4 Pro of $59,990 (MRLP), while the sportier and more high-performance ID. 5 GTX is priced from $72,990.

The ID.4 and ID.5 have been conspicuous in their absence from our market, despite having launched in Europe in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but one upside of their delayed arrival is that Australia gets the updated versions of both models, which includes more power, better driving range, and upgraded interiors.

The ID.4 is a medium SUV and targets the market-leading Tesla Model Y, while the ID.5 is a four-door coupe-like version of the same vehicle, with both models eventually due to be available in single-motor rear-wheel drive Pro variant, or dual-motor all-wheel drive GTX form.

Only the single-motor ID.4 Pro and dual-motor ID. 5 GTX are available at launch, before the lineup expands later this year with the addition of the ID.4 GTX and ID. 5 Pro.

The ID.4 Pro features an 82kWh battery with a single-motor rear-wheel drive layout and outputs of 210kW/545Nm, while the all-wheel drive ID.5 GTX features an 84kWh battery and dual electric motors for a punchier 250kW.

Volkswagen doesn’t quote a torque figure for its dual-motor EVs but some reports suggest it is as high as 679Nm.

In either case, the new VW EVs measure up well against key rivals in both performance and range, with the ID.4 Pro claiming an impressive 544km (WLTP) compared with the recently facelifted Tesla Model Y RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive) which extracts 466km (WLTP) from its smaller 63kWh battery.

The ID.5. Pro, meanwhile, manages 522km (WLTP) range from its more powerful dual-motor drivetrain, which doesn’t quite match the impressive 551km of the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD.

Riding on 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, the ID.4 Pro boasts a Sport-oriented electronic stability control (ESC) function, adaptive chassis control adaptive suspension and progressive rate electric steering.

It covers the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in a rapid 6.7 seconds, which is .2 seconds quicker than the Model Y RWD, and .3 seconds faster than its similarly sized and priced ICE-powered stablemate the Tiguan 162TSI.

The ID.5 GTX meanwhile distributes its more muscular 250kW to a 20-inch wheel and tyre package using Volkswagen’s rear-biased 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, which drops its 0-100km/h sprint to a feisty 5.4 seconds.

That’s line-ball with Honda’s seriously-rapid 2.0-litre turbocharged Civic Type R hot hatch but trails the blistering 4.3 second sprint time of the Tesla Model Y dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Long Range.

In addition to its sportier coupe-style profile the ID. 5 GTX features sports seats with integrated headrests and 480-watt 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio as standard.

Volkswagen is entering the EV space at a time of unprecedented competition from Chinese and other car makers and is counting on its well-established brand presence, including a 100-strong dealer network, along with trademark German quality and engineering, plus competitive pricing and extensive features list for its two new models.

Standard equipment on both the ID.4 Pro and ID. 5 GTX includes:

  • Matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam
  • 3D LED rear lights with dynamic indicators
  • Keyless access
  • Power tailgate
  • Panoramic roof with electric blind
  • Microfleece upholstery
  • Heated and power adjustable front seats with memory and massage function
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Tri-zone climate control
  • 12.9-inch infotainment with App-Connect
  • 360-degree camera system.

Also, standard is Volkswagen’s Travel Assist system which combines adaptive cruise control with active lane assist, side assist, emergency assist, oncoming vehicle braking and a range of other safety technologies to deliver what is claimed to be an impressively unobtrusive driver assistance system.

Both the ID.4 Pro and ID. 5 GTX come with Mode 2 and 3 charging cables as standard and are capable of maximum AC charging of 11kW and maximum DC charging of 175kW.
