Hot Queensland boating destinations
Whether you’re planning a day trip or a boating holiday, make the most of the Sunshine State’s top nautical destinations.
Tangalooma wrecks, Moreton Island
Located just north of the Tangalooma Island Resort are the Tangalooma Wrecks, a cluster of ships scuttled by the Queensland Government to provide safe anchorage spot for recreational boat owners on the eastern side of Moreton Bay. Coral is now starting to form in and around the wrecks, providing a haven for more than 100 species of fish and sometimes even dolphins, wobbegongs and dugongs. Set anchor between wrecks and the shoreline to swim and snorkel or take the tinny over to explore Moreton Island.
Lady Musgrave Island, Great Barrier Reef
One of the world’s greatest natural phenomenon and a World Heritage-listed Marine Park, Lady Musgrave Island is a must for experienced boaties. With warm weather for most of the year, the protected lagoon is ideal for fishing and snorkelling. If visiting between January and March, you may spot baby Loggerhead and Green turtles taking their first dip in the ocean.
Platypus Bay, Fraser Island
From July to November each year Platypus Bay becomes a sanctuary for migrating Humpback whales as they make their extensive 10,000km return journey along Australia’s east coast. Visiting later in the season increases the chances of spotting newborn whale calves. Boat users need to follow a few simple rules to share the water safety with marine mammals and each other.
Mooloolaba Bay
Just 100km from Brisbane, the bay at Mooloolaba is a perfect location for protection from southerly winds. Drop a line or have a swim while everyone else fights for a spot to lay their towel on the beach. You may even spot a few dolphins or turtles.
Prepare for boating season
