Experience adventure in Costa Rica
Hiking
The Arenal National Park is a mecca for hikers. A volcanic hotspot, you can ease your sore muscles with a soak one of many hot springs in the park. Take Sendero Los Heliconias for 1km to see the site of the 1968 laval flow, or try Sendero Los Tucanes to hike to the base of the Arenal Volcano. Get a better view of the volcano on the Sendero Los Miradores from the shores of the volcanic lake.
Surfing
If you love surfing you can’t go past the Nosara area. There’s everything from rugged beaches to sleepy fishing villages, so you’re sure to find something you like. Playa Guiones is the best beach break in the area, although also the most developed. If you want to escape the other surfers, walk north along the beach to Playa Pelada for a rough and rugged beach. Playa Garza is still a sleepy fishing village with a point break. Walk around barefoot and enjoy the lack of tourists.
Ziplining
Ziplining is almost synonymous with Costa Rica and you’ll be spoilt for choice here. Just set into a harness and enjoy flying through the rainforest canopy. Ziplining can be enjoyed in Arenal, with views of the volcano, or in Guanacaste, with views of the coastline. Other great spots include Monteverde, Jaco and Manuel Antonio.
White water rafting
The Turrialba area is a major white water rafting attraction. The Pacuare River offers some of the most scenic rafting in the area, surrounded by virgin rainforest. The trip is a mixture of wild rapids and calm stretches that allow you to look for wildlife.
