Brisbane’s most popular dog breeds revealed
If you live in the Brisbane City Council (BCC) local government area and own a Labrador restriever named Bella you have scooped up the doggie double.
The Labrador was the most popular dog, with 9,728 registrations recorded by BCC at 21 October.
The most popular pooch name was Bella, with 1,467 registered in Brisbane.
Rounding out the top five most popular breeds were Maltese (7,575), border collie (6,757), Staffordshire bull terrier (6,195) and cavalier King Charles spaniel (6,094).
The most popular names after Bella were Charlie (1,461), Molly (1,054), Max (1,040) and Ruby (1,023).
The Labrador is popular around the world, particularly with families because of its loyalty and friendly nature.
Labradors like being exercised with long walks and are best suited to active owners.
While a Labrador can weigh up to 34kg, the second most popular dog, the Maltese, is at the other end of the scale, weighing 1.8-3.6kg.
They are also popular with families and are considered affectionate, obedient, smart and trusting.
Brisbane City Council said it was important to choose the right dog for your lifestyle.
It stresses five important rules you should follow to ensure you are a responsible dog owner:
- Register your dog with the council. Dog registrations must be renewed annually in Brisbane, it is a legal requirement. Dogs must be registered within two weeks of moving into your home or by 12 weeks of age.
- Microchip your dog.
- Walk your dog on a lead at all times when in public. It is for the safety of you, your dog, the community and our natural wildlife.
- Clean up after your dog. Not just in public but also at home.
- Maintain a secure fence at home.
As a responsible dog owner, the council recommends you should also:
- Train and socialise your dog.
- Keep your dog quiet.
- Desex your pet to avoid unwanted litters.
- Prevent your dog attacking or frightening people or animals (especially native animals).
- Don’t leave uneaten pet food outside as this can attract pest or stray animals.
