How to navigate this tricky Far North Queensland intersection

Safety

RACQ’s series provides insights on how to navigate challenging intersections around the State.

RACQ Traffic and Safety Engineering Manager Greg Miszkowycz explains how to negotiate the below intersection in Mossman, Far North Queensland.

If the pink vehicle is turning right, does it have to give way to the red vehicle, dark blue vehicle or both?

The pink vehicle turning right must give way to the dark blue vehicle. The red vehicle that is facing a give-way sign and line must give way to the pink vehicle (and the light blue vehicle in the lane beside the pink vehicle). When the pink vehicle reaches the give-way sign and line, it must give way to the dark blue vehicle travelling on the road it is entering.

If the green vehicle is turning right,  who would this vehicle have to give way to?

Firstly, stop and check if there is a train approaching or on the railway crossing before starting the right turn. If there is no train, the green vehicle must stop and then give way to the yellow vehicle on its right that is facing a give-way sign/line, and also the dark blue vehicle moving through the intersection.

If the yellow vehicle is travelling straight through the intersection and it is safe to cross the railway line, would it still have to give way to the green and dark blue vehicles?

The yellow vehicle must give way to the dark blue vehicle travelling on the road it is crossing, but it doesn’t need to give way to the green vehicle.
