Car seat safety advice for winter

Safety

As temperatures across Queensland fall, ensuring the safety of your little ones in car seats requires special consideration.

One critical aspect of road safety often overlooked by parents is the impact of winter clothing on car seat effectiveness.

RACQ Education Officer Caitlin Delaney explains why it's essential to keep this in mind during the cooler months.

The problem with winter clothes

Winter clothes, such as puffy jackets and jumpers, are designed to keep children warm, however these garments also pose a significant risk when it comes to car seats.

The thickness of winter clothing can prevent the car seat harness from fitting properly, creating a gap between the harness and a child's body.

This gap can cause the harness to be too loose, reducing its effectiveness and increasing the risk of injury if the vehicle were to crash.

How to ensure the harness is fitted safely

To ensure your child is safe, the car seat harness needs to be tightly fitted against their chest.

It’s important to ensure the car seat is appropriate for your child’s age, height and weight.

Make sure you always follow the manufacturer's instructions and the vehicle's manual for proper installation.

Don’t use aftermarket accessories that did not come with the car seat, such as padding or head supports, as they can affect the seat's safety.

Regularly check the car seat for wear and tear, ensure it is still securely installed and adjust the harness as your child grows.

Safe alternatives for keeping warm

To keep your child safe and warm during winter car rides, consider these alternatives:

1.           Dress in thin layers - use snug-fitting layers, such as thermal tops or thin jumpers, which can provide warmth without adding bulk.

2.           Use a blanket - after securing your child in the harness, you can place a blanket over them for extra warmth.

3.           Pre-heat the car - if possible, warm up your car before the trip. This way, your child can be comfortably dressed in lighter clothing.

While keeping your child warm during winter is essential, it is equally important to ensure their safety in the car seat.

By ensuring your car set is installed correctly and choosing appropriate clothing, you can provide both warmth and protection for your little ones every time they hop in the car.
