ANCAP releases safety ratings on eight new SUVs, but Jeep’s new Avenger EV fails to achieve five stars.

It may be one of Australia’s newest models, but Jeep’s new Avenger EV has scored a disappointing three-star rating in the latest ANCAP safety ratings.

Australasia’s independent vehicle safety authority announced its latest ratings for eight new vehicle models, including the new Jeep Avenger and three Chinese marques making their local debut.

In what ANCAP described as “a reflection of the evolving vehicle market,” all eight models are available with either a hybrid or battery electric powertrain.

Among the five-star performers were the Lexus LBX and Volvo EX30 small SUVs, hybrid variants of the new Hyundai Santa Fe large SUV, and three new battery electric SUVs from China – the Leapmotor C10, Zeekr X and XPENG G6.

Another established Chinese model the new generation MG ZS hybrid achieved a four-star rating, while the compact electric Jeep Avenger SUV was rated three stars.

The MG ZS hybrid missed a five-star rating due to its performance in Adult Occupant Protection (75%), where a minimum score of 80% applies.

ANCAP said the MG’s crash tests also saw mixed results, with the omission of a suitable countermeasure, such as a centre airbag to prevent contact between front-seat occupants in a side impact crash. Additionally, in the full width frontal test, the seat belt for the rear passenger allowed excessive forward movement, resulting in ‘marginal’ protection of the head and ‘adequate’ protection for the neck and chest.

The Jeep Avenger battery electric small SUV missed the five-star threshold in all areas of assessment.

ANCAP said the Avenger was limited to three stars through its performance in the Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist assessment areas, demonstrating ‘marginal’ performance in pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcyclist AEB scenarios.

“As an all-new model, it’s disheartening to see the Jeep Avenger fall short on safety,” said ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg.

“With many electric SUVs entering the market and receiving five-star ANCAP ratings, we know manufacturers can prioritise top-tier safety.

“We urge Jeep to do so, ensuring buyers don’t have to compromise on safety.”
