Safety puts a Chery on top

A recall campaign of earlier versions fails to deter the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro small SUV from snaring a coveted five-star safety rating.

The Chery Tiggo 4 is Australia’s newest five-star safety-rated vehicle, with the Chinese-made small SUV achieving the maximum mark in the latest round of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program’s (ANCAP) rigorous testing procedure.

However, in an unusual twist, the five-star ANCAP safety rating applies only to Australian-sold Chery Tiggo 4 Pro vehicles built from 1 November 2024 onwards.

Earlier examples of the Tiggo 4 Pro built before 1 November 2024 are currently involved in Australian Government recall campaign relating to a software issue with the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which means these vehicles may not have the AEB sound alarm activated.

A statement from ANCAP said the affected earlier variants of the Tiggo 4 Pro, numbering 1,923 units, would also qualify for a five-star ANCAP safety rating once rectified in accordance with the recall campaign.

What safety features does the Tiggo 4 pro have?

The Tiggo 4 Pro comes with dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting airbags, and side head-protecting airbag, plus a centre airbag designed to enhance protection for front-seat occupants in side-impact collisions.

Other standard safety features include a 360-degree camera, lane-departure warning, and a suite of ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) technologies including AEB collision avoidance which ANCAP rated as ‘good’ and a lane support system which was awarded full points.

Post 1 November 2024 variants of the Tiggo 4 Pro tested by ANCAP scored 88% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 79% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 85% for Safety Assist.

The Tiggo 4 Pro was released in October last year as the entry-level model in Chery’s rapidly expanding model range which also includes the Omoda 5, Tiggo7 and Tiggo 8 models, all of which have previously been awarded five-star safety ratings.

How much does the Tiggo 4 Pro cost?

A small SUV that competes with the likes of the GWM Haval Jolion, Hyundai Kona, and Mitsubishi ASX, the Tiggo 4 is available in two variants, with the entry-level Urban priced at a keen $23,990 driveaway and the better-specified Ultimate at just $26,990 driveaway.

Under the bonnet is a punchy 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 108kW/210Nm and drives the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Combined cycle fuel consumption is a claimed 7.3L/100km.

Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.

Is Chery a new brand in Australia?

The state-owned Chinese car maker only returned to the Australian market in August 2023 after an ill-fated initial foray in 2011 which ended in 2015 after achieving limited success.

Chery is faring better this time around, thanks in part to improved safety performance across the new model range, its 12,603 sales in 2024 representing a 114% increase on 2023.
