Why car buyers should put safety first

Safety

To help Australians stay safe on our roads, ANCAP Safety has launched a new campaign focusing on the importance of considering its ratings when shopping for a car.

Australia’s rising number of road-related fatalities continue to devastate families, leaving a lasting impact.

Road trauma affects countless lives, highlighting the need for proactive safety measures.

Choose Safety campaign

The new ANCAP video campaign, Choose Safety, aims to remind viewers at pivotal life moments that safety should always come first when selecting or using a vehicle.

“When buying a car for a new life stage – whether it’s your first date, welcoming a baby, picking up a grandchild, or switching to an EV – it’s easy to prioritise features like style or even paint color,” said Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer.

“But safety must be the non-negotiable foundation of every decision.”

The campaign, supported by RACQ, features ads depicting four life milestones: first date, first baby, first grandchild, and first EV.

“By linking life milestones to vehicle safety, we’re drawing on real-life experiences to reshape mindsets,” Ms Hoorweg said.

“Too often, safety becomes an afterthought following an incident. We want to shift that focus upfront because you and your loved ones matter.”

Why ANCAP ratings matter

For more than 30 years, ANCAP has been the trusted source for independent vehicle safety ratings across Australia and New Zealand.

Its rigorous crash testing and performance assessments set industry standards, promoting safer vehicles and roads.

“ANCAP safety ratings are free and accessible, offering clear insights into the safety of your next car, SUV, ute, or van,” Ms Hoorweg said.

“Whether it’s your first car or your 10th, we encourage everyone to make safety-first decisions using this information.”
