Home solar & battery systems: We ask our staff what it’s like to go green
That’s why when he and his girlfriend moved into their newly built home this year, they decided to install a solar and battery system.
“The ability to store power for ourselves and take pressure off the grid was advantageous for us, and we knew this would also help during peak periods when there is extra demand for power,” Damian said.
The couple purchased their system from GEM Energy, now trading as RACQ Solar after the Club bought a majority stake in the award-winning Queensland company following a two-year partnership.
“With so many solar installers in the market it does become overwhelming, but knowing RACQ had partnered with GEM Energy gave us confidence in their services, and they had the products to suit our needs,” Damian said.
How much did the system cost?
During a special promotion, Damian bought a 6.545 kWh QCell solar system with 17 panels, a single phase 5 kwh invertor, home battery with 9.6 kwh of storage, an emergency circuit backup and two garage bollards for $14,479.
“The overall experience was really positive,” he said.
“After sending our enquiry, a sales consultant contacted me to go through the packages and their recommendation of products that would fit our lifestyle and then supplied a quote.
“I was kept informed about when our site consultations would occur and what to expect during the installation process.
“The installers even took the time to make sure we understood the app with the information that was being shown.”
How much do you now save on power?
After installing the solar and battery system, Damian’s power bill went from from between $80 to $130 per month to nothing.
“Once I had the solar installed I changed plans with my electricity company to get a higher feed-in tariff, switching from 3.85 cents to 11.5 cents,” Damian said.
“That, along with the home battery system, has led to a lot of savings.
“It is also a great feeling knowing that we are using a more sustainable energy alternative for powering our home.”
Has solar been a good investment?
Damian firmly believes the investment is worthwhile.
“We were given a very detailed description of the kind of savings we could expect as well as when the return on investment would be,” he said.
“The savings are already evident, so we can use the funds that we would normally spend on electricity bills on other expenses.”
