Community organisations benefit from commitment to help their recovery from natural disasters.

RACQ foundation volunteer gives a helping hand

The RACQ Foundation has achieved a significant milestone, ticking past $11 million in funding for Queensland communities affected by natural disasters in the past 11 years.

The Foundation was established in 2011, following that year’s flooding in Brisbane, to help community organisations across Queensland impacted by disasters.

Senior Foundation Coordinator Bridgette Muller said since 2011, more than $11 million in funding had been distributed to more than 350 grant recipients.

“Through our Community Grants Program, we assist sports clubs, community organisations, clubs and charities, with a focus on supporting grassroots organisations as they are the heart of every community,” Ms Muller said.

“This year the Foundation has again been active following the unprecedented rainfall event that hit south east Queensland.

“The Foundation has pledged $2.1 million to be distributed to 73 organisations impacted by that flooding.

“The Foundation is proud to be able to support Queenslanders in their time of need, helping groups and clubs that play such an important role in our communities.”

One of those beneficiaries was the Maryborough West Football Club which suffered damage to its buildings, equipment and fields after flooding in January and February.

Maryborough West President Hans Karner was given a cheque for $40,000 by RACQ Board President Elizabeth Jameson on behalf of the Foundation during a visit to the region.

Mr Karner said the donation had given the club optimism that it could build on its proud 54-year history for decades to come.

“We now have the funds to replace equipment that we have lost where before we were struggling,” he said.

“I would love to thank the RACQ Foundation for what it has been able to give to not only our club but clubs across Queensland.

“It really brings hope and keeps the clubs running and on their feet, so it’s appreciated.”

Ms Muller said as well as funding, the Foundation’s Community Assistance Program volunteering initiative gave practical support to community groups and farmers impacted by natural disasters.

Foundation volunteers helped Brisbane clubs in the aftermath of this year’s floods, including the Western Districts Netball Association.

Western Districts President Paula Sale said the club was thankful for the support of the RACQ Foundation.

“We are a not-for-profit netball group and try to keep our fees low,” Ms Sale said.

“So having this support, both financially and in the way of labour, has really assisted us in our flood recovery and getting us back up on our feet without it impacting too heavily, financially, on our members.”

If you are a Queensland sporting club, charity or community group that's been impacted by severe weather events, you can apply for an RACQ Foundation Community Grant. Applications close Friday, 7 October 2022.
