What to consider when installing a home EV charger
Make sure you’re charged up and ready to go with a home EV charger best-suited to your e-mobility needs.
-
Socket type
Check the cable has the right socket for your EV. This will commonly be a Type-2 connection but may be a Type-1 for pre 2020 EVs.
-
Installation location and cable length
Think about what your normal parking habits are. Your charger should be conveniently located to accommodate how you park. Make sure you generally park close enough to the proposed location of the charger for the cable to reach the front, middle and rear of the vehicle on both sides. If you’re unsure, we recommend you measure your chosen cable length from your preferred charger location, prior to installation.
-
Power output
Before purchasing an EV charger, it's important to match its output with your vehicle's onboard inverter capability, which sets the upper limit for how fast your EV can charge. Make sure you're happy with this limit and that it will provide enough charge for your day-to-day needs.
-
EV charger ‘smarts’
Do you want to be able to charge from your surplus solar, or connect with a home battery? Do you want to be able to integrate with third-party apps, or charge with cheap grid power via a Time-of-Use tariff? Make sure your new EV charger has all the smart capabilities you want.
-
Consider the futureHave you considered whether you may own more than one EV in the future? If this is a possibility, a three-phase installation or upgrade may be the best solution to put in place now.

*Range per hour figures are approximate and indicative only and may change depending on various factors including but not limited to your available household electricity supply, installation configuration including Energy Queensland controls, driving behaviour, the age of the EV battery and your vehicle's maximum accepted charge rate.
^Commissioning of the EV charger is dependent on a suitably strong Wi-Fi signal (it must be the same network if integrating to a solar inverter) at the location of the installed charger, and password access to the network. Configuration and connection to a PV system inverter is dependent on the correct energy meter being installed at the metre box and full access to any relevant EV charger and inverter applications if/where applicable.
