FNQ motorists warned of flood damage to vehicles

News

RACQ’s Roadside Assistance crews have come to the aid of around 800 motorists in Far North Queensland since Cyclone Jasper hit last week, with many vehicles suffering flood-related damage.

Major damage in the Cape York community of Wujal Wujal.

General Manager Assistance Automotive Mark Boswell said the torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding had increased the number of members requiring roadside assistance in the region.

“The majority of callouts we’ve received have been for vehicles that won’t start, flat tyres and other electrical faults,” Mr Boswell said.

“A number of these calls are the result of cars not being driven for several days or due to driving through floodwaters.

“We expect to see callouts increase in the coming days as the water continues to recede and people gain access to their vehicles.

“Despite ongoing wet weather and challenging conditions, it’s good to see the team doing everything they can to get to our members.”

Mr Boswell said it was important for people to be aware that if their car has been submerged they should call their insurance company rather than roadside assistance due to the potential damage and dangers involved.

“Owners of flooded cars should not try and start them as it could cause more damage to the engine and can be dangerous,” Mr Boswell said.

“Even more concerningly, water can get into the brake system and there’s a risk your brakes won’t work.”

Mr Boswell said EV and hybrid vehicle owners should also be cautious if their car has been exposed to floodwaters.

“Electric and hybrid vehicles should not be started as there is the possibility of electrocution or fire from short circuits.

“If you are unsure whether it’s safe to start your car or if your vehicle has been submerged in water, reach out to your insurance company,” he said.
