RACQ welcomes Opposition’s commitment to the Bruce

Queensland’s peak motoring group has welcomed the Federal Opposition’s commitment to restore the Bruce Highway funding split with the State Government to 80:20.

General Manager Advocacy Joshua Cooney said it comes after months of strong advocacy from RACQ to Fix the Bruce, calling on both sides of politics to commit to a 10-year funding plan and for the previous 80:20 funding agreement to be reinstated.

“On average, 29 people die in crashes on the Bruce Highway each year and 360 are seriously injured. More than half of those fatal crashes are head-on collisions. The Bruce is a dangerous and unforgiving highway and our communities are paying the price,” Mr Cooney said.

“The Bruce Highway is a national road. It’s encouraging to see the Federal LNP agree that the Federal Government must do the heavy lifting to bring it up to scratch with other national highways and commit to the 80:20 funding split.”

Mr Cooney said a bipartisan approach to Fix the Bruce was critical.

“A move away from the pre-existing funding split for new regional transport infrastructure is a step in the wrong direction and undermines efforts to bring the Bruce up to an acceptable standard,” he said.

“Going back to 80:20 is a good start, but we also need both levels of government and both sides of politics to commit to a 10-year funding plan that does not fall victim to political cycles.

“It’s the only way Queenslanders will have certainty about the highway’s future.”

Mr Cooney said RACQ will continue to advocate on behalf of Queenslanders to fix this dangerous national highway.

“The Bruce Highway is the backbone of this State, and it’s broken. It’s supposed to be a national highway but when you compare it to the Pacific or Hume, it’s substandard,” he said.

“Those interstate highways have rightfully been upgraded to three, four and five stars out of five for infrastructure safety, yet around half of the Bruce is still a poor two-star rating.

“In 2024, there is no way Queensland should have any two-star sections on the Bruce.”
