Nearly half of Queensland residents impacted by recent severe weather events are feeling increased anxiety as storm season approaches, according to RACQ’s Attitudes Towards Storm Season Report.

The report found 45% of those affected are experiencing heightened stress, compared to 20% of those who had not been impacted, highlighting the lasting impact of last summer’s destructive weather on the State.

Overall, one in four Queenslanders are more stressed about the upcoming storm season, with 43% expressing concern that the changing climate is leading to more frequent and severe weather events.

RACQ Group Executive Insurance Trent Sayers said the insurer saw an increase of 88% in the volume of severe weather claims compared to the previous year.

“Even though forecasts predicted a dry and warm El Niño summer, our state endured two cyclones and a series of consecutive weather events that had devastating impacts on our communities,” Mr Sayers said.

“In the past 12 months, RACQ Insurance received 16,109 home and motor claims related to severe weather in Queensland.

“The regions with the highest volume of weather claims across the State included the Gold Coast, Wide Bay and Logan-Beaudesert.”

After the impact of last year’s weather events, 45% of Queenslanders said they would start storm season preparation around the home earlier.

As a result, 45% will sign up for severe weather alerts, 40% will ensure their emergency kit is up-to-date and 21% will discuss a family evacuation plan.

“Queensland weather can be extremely unpredictable, and that’s why it’s so important to start preparations for storm season early to ensure your home is protected,” Mr Sayers said.

“Maintenance tasks like cleaning your gutters, cutting back trees and checking your roof for loose sheets, cracked tiles, deteriorated seals or rust can go a long way in preventing damage from extreme weather.

“With the memories of last year’s disasters still fresh, Queenslanders are on high alert, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst as the storm season draws near.”
