RACQ Foundation lends a hand in grassroots communities across the State

News

RACQ Foundation has supported 28 community groups, charities, First Nations Councils and sporting clubs impacted by natural disasters by approving more than $940,000 in funding through its Community Grants Program in FY24.

Despite more than two years passing since the 2022 floods, the impacts of such an extraordinary severe weather event are still being felt by many communities across Queensland.

Currently closed until 2025, the Cooloola Coast Kart Club is still rebuilding after the Gympie region was inundated by floodwaters in February 2022.

Cooloola Coast Kart Club Secretary Cath Briggs said receiving an RACQ Foundation Community Grant has helped to restore the club to its former glory.

“With the funds from the RACQ Foundation Community Grant we have been able to restore the scrutineering and scales area by levelling and raising the space as well as improving drainage and installing new fencing,” Ms Briggs said.

“These changes will allow us to provide improved facilities for our volunteer race officials, drivers and their pit crew on future race days.

“We are excited to return to racing in 2025 and are very thankful for the support from RACQ Foundation.”

During and after the 2022 floods at Cooloola Coast Kart Club.

Originally formed after the 2011 Brisbane floods, the RACQ Foundation aims to support Queensland community groups, First Nations Councils, charities and organisations impacted by natural disasters.

This support now expands to not just include recovery grants and projects but also resilience-based initiatives which may relate to physical, nature-based and social solutions.

RACQ Foundation Coordinator Anna Pimlott said given the increasing threat of severe weather events in Queensland, it was important for the RACQ Foundation to expand its Community Grants Program.

“We know Queensland is one of the most at risk States for natural disasters, so it's crucial for communities to build greater resilience against these events,” Ms Pimlott said.

“Expanding the program to include resilience grants was especially important for us, and it’s been fantastic to see such a great uptake in this category during FY24.

“Whether it’s before or after a weather event, RACQ Foundation is always proud to lend a hand in these grassroots communities.”

If you or a community group you know would like to apply for an RACQ Foundation Community Grant, you can do so here.

Applications for the first funding round of FY25 close at 5pm on Friday 4 October 2024.
