Transport tops Qld’s priority list for Games legacy

Queenslanders have spoken with 76% voting for more frequent, faster and expanded public transport as the most important outcome from Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to RACQ’s latest research.

General Manager Advocacy Josh Cooney said frequency, speed and service routes were the biggest issues holding many Queenslanders back from leaving the car at home and opting for a bus or train.

“It’s no surprise that public transport remains firmly at the top of the priority list for our members as our State plans for growth. Over the next two decades an additional 2 million people are expected to call Queensland home,” Mr Cooney said.

“Improving our public transport services to bring Brisbane in line with other world-class cities that have hosted the Games would be a legacy Queenslanders would be proud of and one that we desperately need.”

The Club’s survey also showed investment in active transport was another high-order issue with 67% listing safe, healthy and accessible neighbourhoods as an important priority.

“South East Queensland has the bones of a promising active transport network, but it’s missing critical links on key corridors leading to and from Brisbane’s CBD,” Mr Cooney said.

“Connecting existing bikeways with safe and accessible active transport infrastructure is an easy win for planners and governments in the lead up to the Games.

“More people will choose to ride, scoot and walk to work if they don’t have to risk their lives by sharing the road with cars, buses and trucks. The more people on bikes and scooters, the less congestion on our roads and the healthier our community.”

Mr Cooney said fixing the Bruce Highway topped the priority list for individual legacy projects, with 85% listing the highway as important or extremely important.

“Interestingly, even people that don’t live along the Bruce believe it’s critical to fix it, showing the vast majority of Queenslanders know how important this highway is for our State,” he said.

“It’s not good enough that on average 31 people are dying in crashes on the Bruce Highway each year, and its fatal and serious injury crash rate is 3 to 5 times higher than the Pacific and Hume highways in the southern states.

“It’s our turn for the Federal Government to fund 80% of the upgrades required and it’s clear our members agree.

“Canberra must step up and commit to fixing the Bruce and giving Queensland its fair share of funding to bring this national highway up to scratch with others.”

RACQ will continue working with all levels of government to advocate on behalf of its members and to drive a positive future for all Queenslanders.
