RACQ welcomes $7.2bn commitment to ‘Fix the Bruce’
Queensland’s leading transport advocate has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to allocate more than $7 billion to make the Bruce Highway safer.
RACQ CEO David Carter said after months of relentless evidence-based campaigning, this is a much needed win for the people of Queensland.
“Today the Federal Government has answered our calls to ‘Fix the Bruce’, committing to fund 80% of upgrades required to ensure all sections of the Bruce Highway are rated a minimum of 3-stars for safety,” Mr Carter said.
“Right now, Queenslanders are three to five times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash on the Bruce Highway compared to the Pacific Highway in New South Wales and Hume Highway in Victoria. It’s simply not fair.
“Queensland has 180,000km of roads and while the 1,673km-long Bruce Highway makes up less than 1% of that network it accounts for more than 10% of the road toll.
“When New South Wales and Victoria had their major national highways fixed, the Federal Government covered at least 80% of the funding needed, now it’s the Bruce’s turn for serious funding,” he said.
The announcement follows the launch of RACQ’s most recent campaign to ‘Fix The Bruce’, which involved leading organisations including the Qld Farmers Federation, Qld Trucking Association, LGAQ, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Qld and Qld Tourism Industry Council.
“We’ve held countless meetings with federal and state politicians on behalf of our members, calling for fair funding to ‘Fix the Bruce’ and save lives,” Mr Carter said.
“We also want to acknowledge the former and current State Governments’ commitment and efforts to fight for increased funding for the Bruce and detailed project planning done to date.”
RACQ will continue to work through the details of this funding announcement to ensure the latest and best data is being used to prioritise upgrades on the most high-risk sections.
“With Queensland’s projected population growth, getting the Bruce up to scratch is no quick fix. There will be ongoing upgrades required over many years,” Mr Carter said.
“What we need now is to see these promises delivered and bipartisan support to do the work that’s required – a commitment beyond political cycles.”
