$500K Recovery Grants Program to help disaster-affected regions

News

Community groups impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred and recent flooding in North Queensland can apply for a RACQ Foundation grant as part of a special funding round worth $500,000.

The grants form part of RACQ’s $1 million commitment to help families and communities hardest hit by the devastating impacts of recent natural disasters.

RACQ General Manager Advocacy Joshua Cooney said RACQ is a purpose-driven organisation that rallies to support Queenslanders in their time of need.

“Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the flooding in North Queensland brought many clubs and charities to their knees after heavy wind and rain. The RACQ Foundation is extending a helping hand to lift them back up again,” Mr Cooney said.

“The RACQ Foundation has been helping communities recover from natural disasters for 15 years. We know sporting clubs, local organisations and charities are the backbone of local communities, so it is important for us to help them get back on their feet as soon as possible.”

Mr Cooney said community organisations, charities, First Nations councils and sporting clubs could use grants to purchase equipment, rebuild infrastructure and restore technology.

“Whether it’s a clubhouse that has sustained roof damage from strong winds or a not-for-profit that’s experienced significant water inundation, the Foundation is here to help, and we encourage community groups to apply as soon as they can,” he said.

“Additional resilient and recovery funding will also be made available to groups right across Queensland through our next round of funding which is scheduled to open in May.”

As at 4pm Wednesday 19 March, RACQ had received 14,447 insurance claims, including 13,839 for home and 608 for motor since Cyclone Alfred crossed the South East Queensland coast more than a week ago.

Chief Executive Insurance Trent Sayers reminded members if they have been affected to lodge their claim online or call 13 72 02 as soon as they can.

“Some communities only had their power restored early this week which means they may have only started to assess the full extent of their damage,” he said.

“Our teams are on the phone and online to help members process their claim and organise any additional support that may be required.

“Since the event, we have had assessors and builders on the ground across the affected regions working with our members to complete make-safes, assess the damage and start the repairs.

“While it is still early days, our teams have completed 993 make-safes, 36.7% of claims have been finalised and $5.9m has been paid to members.

“As the clean-up and recovery continues, helping our members and our communities get back on their feet and into their homes is our number one priority.”
