Resilient homes should be the norm in Queensland

The calls follow the Queensland Premier’s announcement of a new Stronger Homes Grant program to help North Queensland residents make their homes more resilient in the face of future natural disasters.
Speaking from Ingham, RACQ’s General Manager of Advocacy Joshua Cooney said the Government’s funding commitment is an important step in making North Queensland stronger.
“We applaud the State Government’s commitment to adopting a ‘build it back better’ approach to help the region recover and rebuild,” Mr Cooney said.
“The Resilient Homes Fund, introduced after the 2022 floods, is a great example of what can be achieved when all levels of government and industry work together to lessen the impact of future disasters.
“RACQ is committed to working hand-in-hand with the State Government to ensure our eligible members rebuild their homes stronger as a result of the Stronger Homes Grant program.”
Since the February floods, RACQ had received 812 insurance claims, including 575 for home and 237 for motor.
“Our team of claims officers, assessors and builders have been on the ground since flooding hit the north earlier this month,” Mr Cooney said.
“RACQ is well prepared and equipped to support our members through the recovery. We have a strong network of suppliers and builders across the region who have been mobilised to manage the repairs.”
Mr Cooney urged Governments to roll out these kinds of programs permanently.
“Queensland has been at the forefront of piloting programs that help homeowners build their property’s resilience such as the Household Resilience Program (cyclone) and Resilient Homes Fund (flood),” Mr Cooney said.
“We know 67,000 of homes in Queensland are at severe and extreme risk of flood. We shouldn’t wait for the next catastrophic event to implement these programs.
“As a nation, we need to recognise the unfortunate reality that natural disasters are getting more intense and frequent, and without significant investments in risk reducing infrastructure, we’re only going to see affordability pressures and the cost to taxpayers increase.”
