Roundabout rules

Winter 2024
Roundabouts are one-way intersection systems, in which traffic circulates in a clockwise direction. Below are rules about how to approach and exit roundabouts in Queensland. For more information about the Queensland Road Rules please contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads at tmr.qld.gov.au or 13 2380.

Roundabouts

When approaching a roundabout, you should plan well in advance which exit you wish to take.

  • You should obey any road markings, such as arrows, regarding the use of designated lanes.
  • When turning left or right, you must indicate as you approach and enter the roundabout.
  • Going straight ahead through a roundabout does not require an indicator when entering.
  • When entering a roundabout you are required to give way to any traffic within the roundabout (both lanes of a multi-lane roundabout).
  • You may enter a roundabout if there is a safe gap in the traffic flow, but should stay alert for fast-approaching traffic in the roundabout, which you should give way to.
  • You should indicate left whenever you exit a roundabout.
