Discover the ancient natural wonder of Cobbold Gorge
Cobbold Gorge has become a fixture in the travel plans of many people venturing out into the Queensland Back Country.
When Covid lockdowns eased in 2021 and people were allowed to hit the road, they didn’t hold back.
A lot of them headed for the north-west, the south-west, Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country.
They found themselves in places they never knew existed. The great post-Covid exploration of the inland had begun.
Away they went to the lands west of the Great Dividing Range where the Mitchell grass plains are swallowed by the far horizons and the timbered ranges go on and on, extending to the very ends of the world, or so it seems.
One of the places they headed was Cobbold Gorge, in the lower Gulf Country.
Cobbold Gorge Village, 1,760km north-west of Brisbane, is just 35km out of Forsayth.
Getting there is half the fun.
Although there are sections of dirt road between Einasleigh and Forsayth, and a dirt road from Forsayth to Cobbold Gorge, these are roads well-travelled.
Once at Cobbold Gorge you can while away the hours in your cabin or sit around the campfire in your camp. Better still, you can cool off in the pool or simply just chill out reading some pulp fiction while sipping a cocktail on the deck at McDonald’s Bar.
For the more adventurous there is the gorge tour in an electric boat with commentary from an experienced Savannah guide.
The same guide who will escort you on a walk across the sandstone plateau and the famous glass bridge – the only one in Australia – spanning Cobbold Creek.
The sandstone plateau we talk about started forming 1700 million years ago. It’s a ripe old age, but the experts tell us it’s the youngest gorge in Queensland.
So, in terms of gorge years it’s just a rebellious teenager.
There are helicopter flights over the sandstone escarpment, stand-up paddle boarding in the gorge and the Ultimate Outback Adventure Tour taking guests into the most remote corners of the escarpment, including Agate Creek where the silence can be sliced with a knife.
The good news for pet owners is they are welcome as long as they are at the guest’s own accommodation (caravan or motorhome) and are on a leash.
They are not allowed on tour and, no, there is no doggie day care available.
Cobbold Gorge is enormously popular with caravanners who have a choice of ensuite, drive-thru, powered and self-contained sites (no power, no water).
Note that Cobbold Gorge closes for the wet season and will re-open for 2025 on 1 April.
