Essential emergency kit items for storms or cyclones

RACQ is urging Queenslanders to have a plan in place for the State’s severe weather season.

The Club’s latest research has revealed only half of Queenslanders had an emergency plan ahead of storm season and just 43.7% had an emergency kit ready.

RACQ Manager Technical Claims and Event Matt Jarrett said Queensland’s weather could be unpredictable, so it was important to take steps to protect yourself.

“If we’ve learnt anything from the last few years, it’s just how damaging and unpredictable our weather can be,” Mr Jarrett said.

“We are urging Queenslanders not to be complacent when it comes to their storm season planning.

“It’s important to check your emergency kit yearly to ensure that nothing has expired, and you have everything you need in the event you either lose power or have to leave your home.”

Essential items for your storm emergency kit
  • Radio (battery-powered, wind up or solar-powered)
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Drinking water (10 litres per person to last three days)
  • Food (non-perishable food to last three days and a can opener)
  • Toiletries and medicine
  • First-aid kit
  • Important documents (including copies of passport and birth certificate)
  • Power bank
  • Entertainment (playing cards, board games etc).

The research also revealed only 39% of Queenslanders had a bushfire evacuation plan, compared with 47% at the same time last year.

Mr Jarrett said while a wet summer is predicted for most of the State, it was better to be safe than sorry.

“We encourage everyone living in this State to have an evacuation plan, no matter where you live or what weather is predicted,” he said.

“Sitting down with other members of your household to check your emergency kit and discuss an evacuation plan might only take 15 minutes but could be lifesaving during severe weather.

“Your evacuation plan doesn't need to be complex; you should consider how you would get out of your house in an emergency, and where you would go.

“Make sure you also factor in a meeting point in case you are separated from other members of your household.”

Part of the preparation is also ensuring you have access to weather alerts and up-to-date information from authorities.

“Whether it’s signing up to your local council’s weather alerts or checking the Bureau of Meteorology regularly during the season, it’s important to include this step in your plan,” Mr Jarrett said.

“If you do receive warning of a storm near you, make sure you are across any advice from the authorities and that you know where to go to source the most up-to-date information.”
