Roof work description

To be eligible for the roof upgrade/replacement cyclone mitigation benefit, your property must have a roof upgrade or replacement with structural tie-downs (which can include an over-batten roof system).

What is a roof replacement?

It is a complete replacement of the old roof with a new one that is certified to meet current building standards.

What is a roof upgrade?

A roof upgrade is completed to improve the resilience of the roof and is more comprehensive than routine maintenance to the roof. Examples of roof upgrades include:
  • Replacing deteriorated or split battens
  • Replacing nails with screws or straps in batten-to-rafter/ truss connections under sheet metal roofs
  • Replacing skew nails with straps or bolts in rafter/truss-to-wall connections
  • Installation of structural tie-down to the roof, which can include an over-batten roof system (see below)

 A structural tie-down

Is a type of fastener or connector that helps to secure the roof to the underlying structure of a building.

There are various types of structural tie-downs including:

  • Batten and collar tie connections to the rafters
  • Rafters or trusses to the top plate of the wall framing

An over-batten roof system

Is a reinforcement system that connects a beam on the top of the roof to the foundations, making the roof more secure.
