Engineering Safer Journeys: Meet RACQ’s Traffic and Safety Expert

Corporate
After 22 years with RACQ, our Traffic and Safety Engineering Manager Greg Miszkowycz knows a thing or two about Queensland roads.

As part of our Advocacy team, he’s the go-to expert on all things road infrastructure, lending his expertise across a wide range of projects.

“My role is to lead RACQ’s advocacy through traffic engineering research and recommendations, ensuring we engage members and stakeholders on critical transport and safety issues,” Mr Miszkowycz said.

“This includes everything from policy work, State and Federal Government budget submissions, technical surveys on travel speeds and congestion, crash data analysis and assessing speed limit reviews and speed camera proposals.”

While his days are incredibly varied, his purpose boils down to helping Queenslanders move around safely, efficiently and sustainably.

“What drives me in my role, and as an engineer, is to solve problems - fix things and make them better,” he said.

“I get to do this every day through work that is always evolving and changing – which certainly keeps it interesting!

“Plus, the people and culture at RACQ is great, which is the icing on the cake!”

You may have seen Greg’s handywork on social media, providing expertise on our ever popular #QuizTime posts, where we put Queenslanders’ road safety knowledge to the test.

One of Greg’s biggest projects has been RACQ’s #FixTheBruce campaign, where he played a key role in advocating for urgent upgrades to the Bruce Highway through detailed research and media interviews.

“I had access to AusRAP Star Ratings and performed the crash data analysis work for the Bruce, Pacific and Hume Highways,” he said.

“Crash rates revealed motorists are three to five times more likely to be killed or seriously injured on the Bruce Highway than those other national highways in NSW and Victoria.

“The comparison of crash data along with poor AusRAP Star Ratings underpinned our advocacy work and together these made a compelling argument for the need to get on with upgrading the Bruce.”

The Prime Minister even quoted Greg’s crash data comparison of the Bruce with the Pacific and Hume Highways when announcing their $7.2 billion share of extra funding.

“This campaign was a huge collaborative effort, and I’m proud to have worked alongside experts from RACQ and other leading Queensland organisations to make a real difference.”
