RACQ reassures members of support in the wake of cyclone
As Queenslanders continue to face the flooding aftermath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, RACQ is reminding members of the following:
- Safety should remain your number one priority. Please stay off flooded roads and follow the advice from authorities
- If you’re impacted, the fastest way to lodge your claim is online or call us on 13 72 02
- RACQ members who experience prolonged power outages can access food spoilage payments under their contents insurance policy. These payments are made quickly, and you don’t have to pay an excess if your claim is only for food spoilage
- RACQ Insurance policy holders can be assured their home and contents policies cover claims arising from cyclone, flood, storm and storm surge events.

As at 10am, Monday 10 March RACQ had so far received 2,739 insurance claims, including 2,572 for home and 167 for motor as a result of the weather event across South East Queensland, northern New South Wales and the Wide Bay.
RACQ Managing Director and Group CEO David Carter said RACQ continued to monitor the situation and had scaled up teams to support members.
“We have increased the number of our claims lodgement teams to process the increasing number of claims we are receiving online and on the phone,” Mr Carter said.
“RACQ has begun supporting members with our team of builders already on the ground completing emergency make-safes.
“We have a strong network of assessors, suppliers and builders across all of the impacted regions who are being mobilised to manage the repairs.
“As you begin to assess the damage and start the clean-up, please make health and safety, including that of yourself, your family, friends and neighbours, your number one priority.”
RACQ members do not need to be at home or have a copy of their policy to lodge their claim.
“We will have your details and the sooner you contact us, the sooner we can start the recovery process,” Mr Carter said.
Mr Carter also paid tribute to the SES volunteers and other emergency service personnel who have continued to work tirelessly to keep Queenslanders safe.
“RACQ is working hand-in-hand with Department of Transport and Main Roads across Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts to assist with incident management, including stranded vehicles on the main roads network,” Mr Carter said.
“Many roads have been cut off due to flooding, fallen trees and powerlines, and we urge people to please stay off the road, particularly if you live near a flooded road.
“We are seeing water levels rise rapidly in low-lying areas and these rapidly changing conditions can cause significant safety risks for people.”
Mr Carter reminded RACQ members of the support options available for those who may need additional support as a result of this event.
“We know many of our members will be doing it tough in the days and weeks ahead. I would encourage those experiencing vulnerability to let us know as soon as possible so we can work with them to identify how we can best provide support.”

Preparing your claim:
If you can safely return to your home:
- Making notes and taking photos of your belongings will make it easier to submit any claims.
- It’s OK to throw away all spoiled food in your refrigerator- you don’t need to wait for an assessor to visit your home. Make sure you take pictures before throwing these items away.
- Keep a record of model numbers or serial numbers of items you are throwing away to help us replace them.
- It’s OK to remove material and fabrics such as carpets if they are wet to avoid mould growing. Take a photo to help with replacement.
- Make a list of essentials you will need to replace, such as bedding, clothing and food. Keep all receipts from these purchases.
- Please remember safety is the number one priority.
